Having been prompted by my support worker to take part in this research project, I felt very anxious on the first day, particularly about the necessary social interaction and the fact that I was not in the least creative, However, once we started to experiment with the glorious medium of clay, my fears were forgotten.
We made masks with the first tutor and flowers, tile pictures, bowls and tea light holders with the second. We developed an awareness of the human face; learned about the exaggeration of features; experimented with patterns and applied colour using different techniques. Some finished items will be in an exhibition in the spring.
Amidst all this absorbing work, a cohesive group formed, demonstrating an appreciation of each other’s work which was a pleasure to be part of. We were engaged in the process as much as the product and I was certainly relaxed by the lack of any competitive aspect.
The tutors were not only skilled practitioners but also patient and encouraging teachers of their craft. The researcher and her team were unobtrusive so the atmosphere was that of a ‘normal’ workshop. Even the photographer for the web site avoided faces if asked and concentrated on the works in progress.
So every Monday afternoon for the last eight weeks, we have entered that magical zone of creativity, confidence building and mutual support. It has been of enormous benefit to me and, I’m sure, to the other group members. We have even planned a reunion!
