Sandra Walker

Sandra Walker

Sandra Walker is a lecturer in Mental Health at Southampton University where she teaches undergraduate, postgraduate and post registration health professionals. She has more than 20 years experience as a mental health nurse, from Staff Nurse to Modern Matron, and used the Arts, predominantly music, in practice regularly throughout that time. Since moving to the university in 2011 she has co-authored books on Assessment in Mental Health Nursing and is Series editor for the Learning Matters SAGE series for learner Mental Health Nurses and has published in the International Journal of Psychiatric Intensive Care on using ‘LifeMusic’ as an aid to recovery in a forensic mental health setting. She is a reviewer for The Journal of Applied Arts in Health.

Sandra has a BSc (hons) and PGDip in Clinical Practice and is currently completing her PhD exploring the experience people who self-harm have of contact with mental health services within a general hospital environment. Sandra is also a Founder Director of The Good Mental Health Cooperative, Director of The Sanity Company and a musician who actively manages her own mental health using music
