Heike Bartel

Heike Bartel is Associate Professor in German Studies in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies at the University of Nottingham. She is currently Principal Investigator leading the international AHRC-funded project ‘Hungry for Words: An interdisciplinary approach to articulating, communicating and understanding male Anorexia Nervosa’.

Heike has a strong interest in developing interdisciplinary projects using arts and humanities approaches in medicine and science and her ‘Hungry for Words’ project works with contemporary fiction, poetry, comedy, drama, photography as well as graphic novels to raise awareness for eating disorders, related mental health issues and gender.

Her research on German-language and comparative literature includes publications in the area of poetry, the reception of classical mythology in art and culture, gender studies and contemporary women’s writing and she is particularly committed to exploring gender-related questions in the field of mental and physical health and wellbeing.
